What to Look For
Before choosing an AI receptionist for plumbers, plumbing companies should evaluate more than the demo voice.
How to Test Before You Buy
Never evaluate an AI receptionist only through a polished demonstration.
Call it yourself. Then have employees call it. Pretend to be different types of customers.
Try phrases like these:
“I need a plumber tomorrow.”
“My toilet is overflowing everywhere.”
“Do you guys install water heaters?”
“Actually, wait. I need Thursday instead.”
“I’m outside your normal service area. Can you still come?”
Interrupt it. Change the subject. Give an incomplete answer. Speak naturally.
Real customers don't follow scripts. The system needs to handle real conversations, not just ideal demonstrations.
Will Customers Know They're Talking to AI?
Businesses should be transparent about automated systems where appropriate.
But the more important question is whether the interaction is useful.
Customers generally call because they want something accomplished: an appointment, info about service areas, help with a problem.
An AI receptionist succeeds when it helps move that customer toward the appropriate next step quickly and accurately.
What Happens if the AI Doesn't Know the Answer?
A properly configured AI receptionist should have defined boundaries.
If it doesn't have approved info, it should follow a fallback process.
AI should make the business more reliable, not introduce unnecessary uncertainty.
